The IRS and MA Department of Revenue have announced that residents of and businesses principally located in the hardest hit areas of the state may qualify for an automatic extension for filing income tax returns. Those affected on or after March 12 and located in Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester counties now have until May 11 to file and pay as well as make a 2009 IRA contribution.
The IRS will also waive late penalties for employment and excise tax deposits due between March 12 and March 29 if the deposits were made by March 29. Those affected but located outside the above counties may still qualify for an extension. Please call the IRS disaster hotline at (866) 562-5227 for more information.
